Working through Equal Amounts (B) with your class or individual will ensure that they are confident with ‘unitising’, an essential skill for calculating with money. Understanding unitising when it comes to money, means your pupils know that one item can have a value other than one for example, that a 2p coin has the same value of 2 x 1p coins.
In Equal Amounts (B) students have eight sets of pairs of purses containing different coins and they must decide whether the purses contain an equal amount of money or not. Skip counting in 2s, 5s and 10s is reinforced throughout as purses contain multiples of either 1p, 2p, 5p or 10p coins. No purse contains a mixture of denominations.
Students will be recognising 1p, 2p, 5p & 10p coins throughout.
