Finding the Whole is designed to enhance students' understanding of fractions and will see them finding the whole when given a part.
The worksheet begins by using concrete examples of chocolates in a box and sweets in a bag in order to introduce the concept of finding the whole when a fractional part is unknown.
Next, learners are given unit fractions of amounts such as ¼ = 9 and bar models to use in order to find the whole. The scaffolding provided for pupils decreases throughout the section.
In section C, pupils are given a chance to articulate their understanding as they decide whether they agree or disagree with two statements about the method used.
By section D, your students are ready to find the whole when given a unit fraction or an amount without the support of a bar model as here they will answer a further six questions.
