This worksheet introduces pupils to solving one-step equations with the use of function machines, bar models and part-whole models.
The worksheet begins with an example of how each model is used to solve the same equation. Pupils will then solve eight one-step equations using the models that the worksheet suggests.
In section B, students will solve a further four equations (each one contains a different of the four operations). This time, learners are required to select their own model and method.
Section C asks students to consider when different models are more appropriate, for example “Which model works best for an equation involving division”.
