Subtracting Fractions and Mixed Numbers with the Same Denominator worksheet description

This worksheet is designed to scaffold a method for subtracting fractions and mixed numbers without the need for converting between improper fractions and mixed numbers. It uses a number line to help learners count back to the position required. There is also a worksheet for addition using the same method.

Section A begins with some questions where learners can use a number line to subtract a fraction from a whole number.

Section B then provides scaffolding to help learners subtract a mixed number from an integer by first subtracting the integer part of the mixed number.

Section C then again provides number lines to help learenrs subtract a fraction from a mixed number where the answer will be have a lower integer value.

Section D then leads learners through a process of subtracting one mixed number from another but subtracting the integer part first.
