Learners will see examples of two different methods for adding and subtracting mixed numbers. The two methods involve either adding the integer parts followed by adding the fractional parts or converting the mixed numbers to improper fractions before completing the addition or subtraction. Students will then use each method on 6 different questions before articulating what they like and dislike about each method.
Students should be encouraged to consider when each method is more effective than the other before using whichever method they deem more suitable to answer a further 6 questions, 3 of which involve positive and negative numbers.
Section B will see learners problem solving as they complete an addition pyramid, solve a missing number puzzle and select mixed numbers from a set of 4 to equal 3 ⅖.
