Adding Fractions and Mixed Numbers with the Same Denominator WORKSHEET DESCRIPTION

This worksheet is designed to scaffold a method for adding fractions and mixed numbers without the need for converting between improper fractions and mixed numbers.

It uses a number line to help learners count on to the position required. There is also a worksheet for subtraction using the same method.

Section A begins with some questions where adding the fraction to the mixed number will result in a value with the same integer part.

Section B then provides the number lines with decreasing detail as the section progresses. the sums will take the value to the next integer part.

Section C then gives sums with two mixed numbers but the sum of the fractional parts is less than 1.

Section D then leads learners through a process of adding the integer part of the second mixed number to the first before using a number line to count onto the answer.

Sections E and F then consolidate the understanding with some sums without a number line and two addition pyramids.
