Applications of Functions: Water Levels WORKSHEET
Suitable for Grades: Algebra I, IM 1
CCSS: HSF.IF.B.4
CCSS Description: For a function that models a relationship between two quantities, interpret key features of graphs and tables in terms of the quantities, and sketch graphs showing key features given a verbal description of the relationship. Key features include: intercepts; intervals where the function is increasing, decreasing, positive, or negative; relative maximums and minimums; symmetries; end behavior; and periodicity.
Applications of Functions: Water Levels WORKSHEET DESCRIPTION
Students will consider water levels of various containers and the graphs of their depths plotted against time throughout this worksheet, which is very helpful in discussions with your students about rates of change. In section A, learners match 15 containers to their graphs across three questions. The graphs vary from straight lines to curves and a combination of both. All containers start as empty and liquid is poured in at a constant rate. Next, students are given 6 containers and 6 empty axes on which they must draw the depth of the liquid against the time. Then in section C, students are given two graphs that represent the filing of two swimming pools, and they will draw a cross section image of each pool.
