Column Vector Addition WORKSHEET

Suitable for Grades: Pre-Calculus
CCSS: HSN.VM.B.4
CCSS Description: (+) Add and subtract vectors. a. Add vectors end-to-end, component-wise, and by the parallelogram rule. Understand that the magnitude of a sum of two vectors is typically not the sum of the magnitudes. b. Given two vectors in magnitude and direction form, determine the magnitude and direction of their sum. c. Understand vector subtraction v – w as v + (–w), where –w is the additive inverse of w, with the same magnitude as w and pointing in the opposite direction. Represent vector subtraction graphically by connecting the tips in the appropriate order, and perform vector subtraction component-wise.

Column Vector Addition WORKSHEET DESCRIPTION

This worksheet scaffolds the addition of column vectors through several sections including examples throughout. Section A begins the exercise by asking learners to write the column vector for the resultant of two vectors displayed on a grid. Section B then asks leaners to draw and write the resultant vector for the sum of two column vectors. Section C then askes learners to write the resultant vector for some column vector additions. Section D then introduces multiples to give parallel vectors. Section E leads learners through the subtraction of vectors by adding the negative vector. Section F then provides some column vector subtractions. Section G provides a mixture of vector addition and subtraction with multiples. Finally, section H presents a “spot the mistake and correct” question.
