Compare Fractions Less Than 1 WORKSHEET

Suitable for Grades: 4th Grade
CCSS: 4.NF.A.2
CCSS Description: Compare two fractions with different numerators and different denominators, e.g., by creating common denominators or numerators, or by comparing to a benchmark fraction such as 1/2. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.

Compare Fractions Less Than 1 WORKSHEET DESCRIPTION

Compare Fractions less than 1 uses bar models to aid students in deciding which fraction from a pair is the largest and equivalent fractions to use inequalities to compare fractions.
In section A, students will color in bar models to compare the size fractions. Section B begins with an example showing students how to use equivalent fractions to compare. Scaffolding is provided for the first four questions; the denominator of the equivalent fraction is given. Throughout section B, one denominator is always a factor of the other.

All worksheets are created by the team of experienced teachers at Cazoom Math.

Frequently Asked Questions

Students use coloring activities with bar models to visually see which fraction is larger when comparing pairs. This hands-on approach helps 4th graders develop a concrete understanding of fraction size before moving to more abstract comparison methods. The visual representation makes it easier to grasp why one fraction might be greater than another.
