Completing the Square using Algebra Tiles WORKSHEET

Suitable for Grades: Algebra I, IM 1
CCSS: HSA.REI.B.4.B, HSA.SSE.B.3.B
CCSS Description: Solve quadratic equations by inspection (e.g., for x2 = 49), taking square roots, completing the square, the quadratic formula and factoring, as appropriate to the initial form of the equation. Recognize when the quadratic formula gives complex solutions and write them as a ± bi for real numbers a and b.

Complete the square in a quadratic expression to reveal the maximum or minimum value of the function it defines.

Completing the Square using Algebra Tiles WORKSHEET DESCRIPTION

This worksheet makes excellent use of algebra tiles to help students deepen their understanding of factoring by completing the square. Students will begin with considering expressions which make perfect squares in section A. The worksheet progresses to include expressions that factor to (x+a)^2+b where b is positive and negative, expressions where a and or b are fractional, and finally, to quadratics with a coefficient of x squared which is greater than one.

There are examples of the method throughout the worksheet to guide your learners and encourage independence. Each question comes with a squared grid for students to draw the algebra tiles using the grid/area model.
