Distance on a Coordinate Grid WORKSHEET

Suitable for Grades: 6th Grade
CCSS: 6.NS.C.8
CCSS Description: Solve real-world and mathematical problems by graphing points in all four quadrants of the coordinate plane. Include use of coordinates and absolute value to find distances between points with the same first coordinate or the same second coordinate.

Distance on a Coordinate Grid WORKSHEET DESCRIPTION

Students work with coordinates in all four quadrants as they begin to consider how distance between two points on the same horizontal or vertical line can be calculated (meaning the Pythagorean theorem is not necessary).

In section A, learners will find the distance between seven pairs of points shown on a pair of axes.

Then in section B they will use only pairs of coordinates to state the distance between a further six pairs of points. Here students are asked to consider whether the points lie on the same vertical or horizontal line.

Next in section C students will plot and draw three different polygons using coordinates of their vertices before finding their perimeters.

Lastly, students will use given distances and compass directions to deduce coordinates in questions such as “Point A (7,0) is 7 units due north of Point B. What are the coordinates of Point B?”.
