Estimating Rates of Change (A) WORKSHEET

Suitable for Grades: Algebra I, IM 1
CCSS: HSF.IF.B.6
CCSS Description: Calculate and interpret the average rate of change of a function (presented symbolically or as a table) over a specified interval; estimate the rate of change from a graph.

Estimating Rates of Change (A) WORKSHEET DESCRIPTION

This worksheet is designed to give practice on finding instantaneous and average rates of change via a tangent or chord to a curved graph. Learners will need to draw the tangents and chords before finding the slope. Section A provides two curved functions and asks for the slopes of tangents at specific points. Section B looks at comparing an instantaneous rate of change from a tangent with an average rate of change from a chord.

All worksheets are created by the team of experienced teachers at Cazoom Math.

Frequently Asked Questions

This worksheet is designed for students in IM 1 and Algebra I courses. The concepts of instantaneous and average rates of change are foundational topics that bridge basic algebra with more advanced calculus concepts. Students at this level are ready to work with tangent lines and understand how slopes relate to real-world situations.
