Factoring Trinomials: a = 1 WORKSHEET

Suitable for Grades: Algebra I, IM 1
CCSS: HSA.SSE.B.3
CCSS Description: Choose and produce an equivalent form of an expression to reveal and explain properties of the quantity represented by the expression.★ a. Factor a quadratic expression to reveal the zeros of the function it defines. b. Complete the square in a quadratic expression to reveal the maximum or minimum value of the function it defines. c. Use the properties of exponents to transform expressions for exponential functions. For example the expression 1.15t can be rewritten as (1.151/12)12t ≈ 1.01212t to reveal the approximate equivalent monthly interest rate if the annual rate is 15%

Factoring Trinomials: a = 1 WORKSHEET DESCRIPTION

This worksheet introduces students to factoring quadratic expressions by using product and sum grids.

Section A provides plenty of practice, as students have eighteen quadratic expressions which they must factor. Our design encourages students to write out which number they must sum to and which number is the product. The first few questions are scaffolded to further aid students. In this section, all terms are positive. Negative terms are introduced in section B. Here, there are a further twenty one questions in the same format as section A. The coefficient of x squared remains one throughout; however, learners will consider expressions with positive and negative constants and coefficients of x.
