Suitable for Grades: 3rd Grade
CCSS: 3.NF.A.1, 3.NF.A.3.B
CCSS Description: Understand a fraction 1/b as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into b equal parts; understand a fraction a/b as the quantity formed by a parts of size 1/b.
Explain equivalence of fractions in special cases, and compare fractions by reasoning about their size. Recognize and generate simple equivalent fractions, e.g., 1/2 = 2/4; 4/6 = 2/3; explain why the fractions are equivalent.
This worksheet uses various representations of fractions in order to confirm the equivalence of ½ and 2/4’s.
Pupils will state the fraction of different shapes that are shaded, shade ½ and 2/4 of four different shapes, use counters to find fractions of amounts and find ½ and 2/4 on a fraction wall. At different points throughout the worksheet, students will be asked to comment on what they notice about the fractions ½ and 2/4’s.
