Inputs and Outputs - Two Step Function Machines WORKSHEET

Suitable for Grades: 8th Grade, Algebra I, IM 1
CCSS: 8.F.A.1, 8.F.B.4
CCSS Description: Understand that a function is a rule that assigns to each input exactly one output. The graph of a function is the set of ordered pairs consisting of an input and the corresponding output.

Construct a function to model a linear relationship between two quantities. Determine the rate of change and initial value of the function from a description of a relationship or from two (x, y) values, including reading these from a table or from a graph. Interpret the rate of change and initial value of a linear function in terms of the situation it models, and in terms of its graph or a table of values.

Inputs and Outputs - Two Step Function Machines WORKSHEET DESCRIPTION

Your students can practice mental methods while considering operations and their inverses throughout this worksheet. Function machines are also a good stepping stone for algebraic methods.

In section A, students will be processing inputs through double-operation function machines.

In section B, students will complete the number machines by using inverse operations to find the inputs from given outputs.

Students will find both the inputs and outputs of two-step function machines in section C.

Most inputs and outputs are positive integers. Learners only have to work with decimal numbers on four occasions and add to a negative number once.
