Introducing Functions - Using Function Machines WORKSHEET

Suitable for Grades: Algebra II, IM 2
CCSS: HSF.IF.A.1, HSF.IF.A.2
CCSS Description: Understand that a function from one set (called the domain) to another set (called the range) assigns to each element of the domain exactly one element of the range. If f is a function and x is an element of its domain, then f(x) denotes the output of f corresponding to the input x. The graph of f is the graph of the equation y = f(x).

Use function notation, evaluate functions for inputs in their domains, and interpret statements that use function notation in terms of a context.

Introducing Functions - Using Function Machines WORKSHEET DESCRIPTION

Introducing function notation using “function machines” is a fantastic way to help learners visualize and understand the concept of functions. This worksheet will build students’ understanding and confidence in using function notation and evaluating functions.

In Section A, learners are given inputs, functions, and outputs, and are asked to express these using function notation. They will also match function machines to the correct function notation and fill in missing details in function machines when provided with the function notation.

Then, in Section B, students are asked to complete function machines for eight different functions before using these to evaluate the functions for given values.

Students will encounter functions denoted by f, g, and h and the variable 𝑥.
