Suitable for Grades: 4th Grade, 5th Grade
CCSS: 4.MD.A.1, 5.MD.A.1
CCSS Description: Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units including km, m, cm; kg, g; lb, oz.; l, ml; hr, min, sec. Within a single system of measurement, express measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Record measurement equivalents in a two-column table. For example, know that 1 ft is 12 times as long as 1 in. Express the length of a 4 ft snake as 48 in. Generate a conversion table for feet and inches listing the number pairs (1, 12), (2, 24), (3, 36), …
CCSS Description: Convert among different‑sized standard measurement units within a given measurement system (e.g., convert 5 cm to 0.05 m), and use these conversions in solving multi‑step, real world problems.
Learners will work with metric measures for length throughout this worksheet including: converting between kilometers and meters, comparing lengths and addition and subtraction of lengths, over multiple sections.
In section A students decide when measuring in meters or kilometers is most appropriate.
A double number line is used for converting a whole number of kilometers into meters in section B.
Next, students will convert lengths such as 3 km 425 m into meters and vice versa in section C. This section also includes converting fractional amounts of kilometers into meters.
Inequality symbols are used to compare distances in section D.
Lastly students will add and subtract lengths in either km and m or meters.
