Literal Equations (A) - Rewriting to Solve for a Variable WORKSHEET
Suitable for Grades: Algebra I, IM 1
CCSS: HSA.CED.A.4
CCSS Description: Rearrange formulas to highlight a quantity of interest, using the same reasoning as in solving equations. For example, rearrange Ohm’s law V = IR to highlight resistance R.
Literal Equations (A) - Rewriting to Solve for a Variable WORKSHEET DESCRIPTION
Students can complete this worksheet after being introduced to formulae, the ‘subject’, and rearranging formulae. All the formulae take one step, or occasionally two, to change the subject, and the worksheet has four different sections.
In sections A and B, students will use addition or subtraction to change the subject of each formula. The variables used are consistent throughout section A.
Next, in sections C and D, students are required to use division to rearrange each formula.
This ‘write on’ worksheet has enough space for your students’ workings and answers.
To extend students, encourage them to use substitution to check their rearrangement.
