Multiply Mixed Numbers WORKSHEET

Suitable for Grades: 5th Grade, 7th Grade
CCSS: 5.NF.B.4.A, 7.NS.A.2.C
CCSS Description: Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication to multiply a fraction or whole number by a fraction. a. Interpret the product (a/b) × q as a parts of a partition of q into b equal parts; equivalently, as the result of a sequence of operations a × q ÷ b. For example, use a visual fraction model to show (2/3) × 4 = 8/3, and create a story context for this equation. Do the same with (2/3) × (4/5) = 8/15. (In general, (a/b) × (c/d) = ac/bd.)

Apply properties of operations as strategies to multiply and divide rational numbers.

Multiply Mixed Numbers WORKSHEET DESCRIPTION

This worksheet introduces students to two methods for multiplying mixed numbers.

First, students will learn to multiply mixed numbers using the area model, a visual and intuitive approach. Then, they will be shown how to convert mixed numbers to improper fractions to find the product, providing a more traditional method.

Learners will apply each method to solve 8 pairs of mixed numbers, comparing and contrasting the methods by discussing their preferences. The problems increase in difficulty, gradually building students' confidence and proficiency.

In the final question, students will tackle a multiplication arithmagon that includes a negative mixed number, adding an extra layer of complexity.
