Our Solar System- Discovering Size WORKSHEET

Suitable for Grades: 7th Grade, Geometry, IM 2
CCSS: 7.G.A.1, HSG.MG.A.1
CCSS Description: Solve problems involving scale drawings of geometric figures, including computing actual lengths and areas from a scale drawing and reproducing a scale drawing at a different scale.

Use geometric shapes, their measures, and their properties to describe objects (e.g., modeling a tree trunk or a human torso as a cylinder).

Our Solar System- Discovering Size WORKSHEET DESCRIPTION

Celebrate World Space Week from 4th October and inspire some awe and wonder at the universe we journey through at home or in school with this fun and engaging worksheet.

The Earth is scaled down to the size of a tennis ball and from here learners will substitute real diameters of the planets and their distance from the Sun into two different formulae to calculate their size and distance from the Sun based on the scaled size of Earth. Examples are provided so that pupils can work independently throughout.

We have created 5 worksheets altogether suitable for all high school learners.

All worksheets are created by the team of experienced teachers at Cazoom Math.

Frequently Asked Questions

Students will work with units and dimensions as they apply mathematical formulas to real astronomical data. They'll practice substitution by plugging actual planetary diameters and distances into scaling equations, then perform calculations to determine proportional sizes and distances when Earth is modeled as a tennis ball.
