Partitioning Rectangles WORKSHEET

Suitable for Grades: 3rd Grade
CCSS: 3.MD.C.5
CCSS Description: Recognize area as an attribute of plane figures and understand concepts of area measurement. a. A square with side length 1 unit, called “a unit square,” is said to have “one square unit” of area, and can be used to measure area. b. A plane figure which can be covered without gaps or overlaps by n unit squares is said to have an area of n square units

Partitioning Rectangles WORKSHEET DESCRIPTION

This worksheet will give learners an opportunity to think about area and how rectangles can be partitioned in different ways. It begins by asking learners to partition using 1 by 1 squares. The rectangles are drawn on square dotty grids to make the partitioning easier. The next sections then ask for larger rectangles to be partitioned using 2 by 2 and 3 by 3 squares. The task is then extended by asking learners to partition using smaller rectangles in different orientations. Learners will need to think carefully about which way round the smaller rectangles should go.
