Rearranging Formulas with Function Machines WORKSHEET

Suitable for Grades: 8th Grade, Algebra I, IM 1
CCSS: 8.F.A.1, 8.F.A.2
CCSS Description: Understand that a function is a rule that assigns to each input exactly one output. The graph of a function is the set of ordered pairs consisting of an input and the corresponding output.

Compare properties of two functions each represented in a different way (algebraically, graphically, numerically in tables, or by verbal descriptions). For example, given a linear function represented by a table of values and a linear function represented by an algebraic expression, determine which function has the greater rate of change.

Rearranging Formulas with Function Machines WORKSHEET DESCRIPTION

Following on from Forming Expressions with Function Machines, this worksheet scaffolds the process of rearranging simple formulas with the aid of function machines. In section A, learners need to complete the function machines that send the input to the output in the given formulas. Section B then asks learners to write the formulas from given function machines. Section C then provides a formula and a function machine and asks learners to produce an inverse function machine and to write the rearranged formula. Lastly, section D asks learners to go through the whole process from a given formula.
