Reverse and Combined Mean WORKSHEET

Suitable for Grades: 6th Grade
CCSS: 6.SP.B.5.C
CCSS Description: Giving quantitative measures of center (median and/or mean) and variability (interquartile range and/or mean absolute deviation), as well as describing any overall pattern and any striking deviations from the overall pattern with reference to the context in which the data were gathered.

Reverse and Combined Mean WORKSHEET DESCRIPTION

This worksheet includes worded reverse and combined mean problems, across four different sections.

In Section A, learners will define the mean and rearrange the formula to find the sum of the terms and the number of terms.

Sections B to D present a range of questions. For example, “The average number of pages in 4 books is 350. A new book with 420 pages is added to the collection. What is the new average number of pages for the 5 books?”.

The questions require students to: find a new mean when a data point is added, determine the value of an added data point using existing and new means, and calculate the mean for one group using a combined mean.

Each section challenges students to deepen their understanding and application of mean calculations.
