Single Transformations on the Coordinate Plane WORKSHEET

Suitable for Grades: 8th Grade
CCSS: 8.G.A.3, 8.G.A.4, HSG.CO.A.5
CCSS Description: Describe the effect of dilations, translations, rotations, and reflections on twodimensional figures using coordinates.

Understand that a two-dimensional figure is similar to another if the second can be obtained from the first by a sequence of rotations, reflections, translations, and dilations; given two similar two-dimensional figures, describe a sequence that exhibits the similarity between them.

Given a geometric figure and a rotation, reflection, or translation, draw the transformed figure using, e.g., graph paper, tracing paper, or geometry software. Specify a sequence of transformations that will carry a given figure onto another.

Single Transformations on the Coordinate Plane WORKSHEET DESCRIPTION

Students should only describe transformations using a single transformation throughout this worksheet. Learners will identify the transformation from rotation, reflection, translation, and dilation that maps an object to an image in nine questions all on their own set of axes. Objects and images are clearly labeled and translucent to aid students. Tracing paper may be useful and should be accessible to students while they complete this task.

Ensure students only use correct mathematical language and include all the required information to describe transformations, avoiding words such as flip, mirror, turn, and move.

Dilations only have positive integer scale factors, making the worksheet suitable for both higher students and students who are still learning.
