Solving One Step Equations WORKSHEET

Suitable for Grades: 6th Grade
CCSS: 6.EE.B.6, 6.EE.B.7
CCSS Description: Use variables to represent numbers and write expressions when solving a real-world or mathematical problem; understand that a variable can represent an unknown number, or, depending on the purpose at hand, any number in a specified set.

Solve real‑world and mathematical problems by writing and solving equations of the form x + p = q and p x = q for nonnegative rational numbers.

Solving One Step Equations WORKSHEET DESCRIPTION

This worksheet introduces students to solving one step equations with the use of function machines, bar models and part part whole models.

The worksheet begins with an example of how each model is used to solve the same equation. Students will then solve eight one step equations using the models that the worksheet suggests.
In section B, students will solve a further four equations (each one contains a different of the four operations). This time, learners are required to select their own model and method.
Section C asks students to consider when different models are more appropriate, for example “which model works best for an equation involving division”.

All worksheets are created by the team of experienced teachers at Cazoom Math.

Frequently Asked Questions

This worksheet is designed for 6th grade students who are learning to solve one step equations. The visual models like function machines and bar models help make abstract algebraic concepts more concrete for students at this level. The progression from guided practice to independent model selection builds the foundation skills needed for more advanced equation solving.
