Using a Fraction Wall - Adding Fractions WORKSHEET

Suitable for Grades: 5th Grade
CCSS: 5.NF.A.1
CCSS Description: CCSS Description: Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12.(In general, a/b + c/d = (ad + bc)/bd.)

Using a Fraction Wall - Adding Fractions WORKSHEET DESCRIPTION

Adding fractions using a fraction wall reinforces the fact that fractions must have the same denominator in order to add them. This worksheet will help your learners to find equivalent fractions and before adding a pair of fractions.

There are 15 questions in total for pupils to answer which have been carefully put together to aid learners progression; beginning with adding fractions with the same denominators, moving on to finding the sum of pairs of fractions where one denominator is a multiple of the other, then when denominators share a common factor and lastly when equivalent fractions on the wall must found before the fractions can be added.

There are more resources in our series using a fraction wall, including introducing the fraction wall, finding equivalent fractions and comparing fractions. See them in the related resources below.
