Using the Associative and Commutative Properties WORKSHEET
Explain why addition and subtraction strategies work, using place value and the properties of operations.
Using the Associative and Commutative Properties WORKSHEET DESCRIPTION
This worksheet is designed to get learners to think about how they can use the associative and commutative properties of addition to make calculations easier. Section A leads them through the process of regrouping a sum so that they do not just work from left to right but add later parts of a calculation while still obeying the order of operations. Section B then shows them that reordering numbers in a sum can help group number bonds together to simplify a calculation. Sections C and D then introduce the process of partitioning numbers to form other number bonds. Section E provides some practice questions for learners to use their own method and section F gives some word problems to solve.
