Adding and Subtracting Fractions with Unlike Denominators (B) WORKSHEET
Suitable for Grades: 5th Grade
CCSS: 5.NF.A.1
CCSS Description: CCSS Description: Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12.(In general, a/b + c/d = (ad + bc)/bd.)
Adding and Subtracting Fractions with Unlike Denominators (B) WORKSHEET DESCRIPTION
This worksheet will guide students through using equivalent fractions to add and subtract fractions with different denominators. Sections A and B are matching activities where students have to match equivalent calculations such as ⅛ + ½ = ⅛ + 4/8. Section C begins with an example which is followed by nine addition and subtraction questions. Scaffolding is slowly removed as the section progresses to lead students to independently answer the questions.
All fractions have denominators less than or equal to sixteen, and in each calculation ,one denominator is a multiple of the other. In addition to this, all answers are within 1.
