CCSS Description: Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, a/b + c/d = (ad + bc)/bd.)

Adding and Subtracting Fractions worksheet description

Combine students' knowledge of adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators by finding equivalent fractions in this adding and subtracting fractions worksheet.

Section A starts with adding and subtracting unit fractions. An example shows how this is done using fraction equivalence to encourage students to do this while reminding them that fractions must have the same denominator before they can be added or subtracted.

In section B, students gradually progress to working with one unit fraction and one non unit fraction and then to two fractions with a numerator greater than 1.

Challenge students in section C with addition and subtraction of mixed numbers and improper fractions.
