Area of Regular Hexagons WORKSHEET

Suitable for Grades: 7th Grade, 8th Grade
CCSS: 7.G.B.6, 8.G.B.7
CCSS Description: Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, volume, and surface area of two- and three-dimensional objects composed of triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, cubes, and right prisms.

Apply the Pythagorean Theorem to determine unknown side lengths in right triangles in real-world and mathematical problems in two and three dimensions.

Area of Regular Hexagons WORKSHEET DESCRIPTION

This worksheet guides students through using the Pythagorean Theorem to calculate the area of six regular hexagons.

In questions 1 - 3, learners are asked to first find the vertical height of an equilateral triangle inside the hexagon using the Pythagorean Theorem but are required to deduce how to use this to calculate the area of the whole hexagon.

Questions 4 - 6 simply ask students to calculate the area of the hexagons.

This activity will test students’ problem solving and communication skills and makes for a lovely extension to work on the Pythagorean Theorem, regular polygons, or area.

Why not challenge learners to devise a formula for their calculations?

All worksheets are created by the team of experienced teachers at Cazoom Math.

Frequently Asked Questions

This worksheet is designed for 7th and 8th grade students who are learning about Properties of Shapes. At these grade levels, students have typically developed the foundational skills needed to work with the Pythagorean Theorem and can handle the multi-step reasoning required to connect triangle heights to hexagon areas.
