Finding Quadratic Sequence nth Terms WORKSHEET

Suitable for Grades: Algebra II, IM 3
CCSS: HSA.SSE.B.3
CCSS Description: Choose and produce an equivalent form of an expression to reveal and explain properties of the quantity represented by the expression.★ a. Factor a quadratic expression to reveal the zeros of the function it defines. b. Complete the square in a quadratic expression to reveal the maximum or minimum value of the function it defines. c. Use the properties of exponents to transform expressions for exponential functions. For example the expression 1.15t can be rewritten as (1.151/12)12t ≈ 1.01212t to reveal the approximate equivalent monthly interest rate if the annual rate is 15%

Finding Quadratic Sequence nth Terms WORKSHEET DESCRIPTION

Students will find the nth term of 11 quadratic sequences by subtracting the quadratic part and finding the nth term of the resulting linear sequence throughout this well scaffolded worksheet.

The worksheet begins with an example. Here students are guided through the process of finding the first and second differences of terms in order to determine the coefficient of n2, subtracting this from the sequence, finding the nth term of the resulting linear sequence, and finally combining this to find the nth term of the quadratic sequence.

The nth terms get increasingly more complex as the worksheet progresses and includes nth terms where the coefficient of n2 is greater than one.
