Using a Calculator (B) WORKSHEET
Suitable for Grades: 8th Grade
CCSS: 8.NS.A.2
CCSS Description: Use rational approximations of irrational numbers to compare the size of irrational numbers, locate them approximately on a number line diagram, and estimate the value of expressions (e.g., π2). For example, by truncating the decimal expansion of √2, show that √2 is between 1 and 2, then between 1.4 and 1.5, and explain how to continue on to get better approximations.
Using a Calculator (B) WORKSHEET DESCRIPTION
This worksheet encourages students to use calculator functions and buttons to carry out operations such as squaring, squaring rooting, using brackets, multiplying by pi, finding the mean of decimal numbers, and more.
In section A, students will write down the full calculator display to seven questions such as 34.88 × 2.13 – 15.64. Then in section B, students will answer seven word problems, considering how to use their calculator to do so.
Learners need to be able to find fractions of amounts, calculate the mean, find the area of a triangle, and round to a given number of decimal places and significant figures in order to answer the questions in section B.
