Using a Calculator (C) WORKSHEET
Suitable for Grades: 8th Grade
CCSS: 8.NS.A.2
CCSS Description: Use rational approximations of irrational numbers to compare the size of irrational numbers, locate them approximately on a number line diagram, and estimate the value of expressions (e.g., π2). For example, by truncating the decimal expansion of √2, show that √2 is between 1 and 2, then between 1.4 and 1.5, and explain how to continue on to get better approximations.
Using a Calculator (C) WORKSHEET DESCRIPTION
This worksheet is the last in our series designed to encourage students to use calculator functions and buttons to carry out operations such as squaring, squaring rooting, using brackets, multiplying by pi, working with fractions, and more.
In section A, students will write down the full calculator display to seven questions similar to those found in state exam questions today. These answers will also be rounded to three significant figures. Then in section B, students will answer six word problems, considering how to use their calculator to do so. Questions include finding the surface area of earth; however, any formulae needed are provided.
