HOW TO SOLVE A SYSTEM OF EQUATIONS?
If you ever wondered what is the best technique for solving systems of equations, then we need to explain to you the substitution method. The substitution method is used in topics such as linear equations, programming, nonlinear systems, and many more. The best part is that is very easy and fun, once you start solving equations using the substitution method!
SUBSTITUTION METHOD – DEFINITION
If we need to explain it with a definition, the substitute method is a way of solving systems of equations by expressing them in equations with only one variable.
THE IMPORTANCE OF LEARNING SUBSTITUTION
The substitution method is an important concept in algebra because it is one of the first opportunities for students to showcase their understanding of what variables are in expressions and equations.
Once students grasp this concept of the meaning of a variable, they will successfully substitute numbers for that variable and begin understanding the essence of Algebra. Substitution method can also be significant in the workplace in several careers, especially within the sciences and computational careers.
SO HOW MANY STEPS DOES THE METHOD INVOLVE?
The substitution method includes three steps. The first thing you need to do is to solve one equation of the variables. Then you continue by a substitute this expression into the other equation and solve the other one. The third step is to resubstitute the value in the original equation and find the variable. It may sound complicated and hard when you read it, but you just need to practice and the results will be inevitable.
SUBSTITUTION METHOD WORKSHEETS MAKE EXCELLENT REVISION ACTIVITIES
Substitution forms part of the curriculum, so if students master this method they will be more confident when approaching their exams.
Substitution method worksheets make excellent revision materials, as they contain engaging activities that will help students enjoy the topic. If a student enjoys completing substitution activities, they are likely to learn this important skill much faster, and when exam time rolls around, they won’t be worried because they have become substitution experts.
USE OF SUBSTITUTION IN THE WORKPLACE AND REAL LIFE
Substitution is a useful technique to use whenever someone encounters an algebraic equation.
This might not even be in math: there are many applications of algebra in science, computing, and even healthcare, so all professionals working in these areas will have to be confident with substitution. If math students wish to follow any of these career paths, they will need to pass their exams and to do that they will need to know how to substitute into algebraic expressions.
The system of equations can be used in many situations in real-life. For example, you will be solving equations using the substitution method when trying to determine if you making more profit from one product than from another, by taking few variables into accounts, such as transport, salaries, benefits, operational costs, commissions, and others.
In almost any situation in life if there is an unknown quantity you can use the substitution method to figure it out. With this method, you can easily calculate income over time, rates, profit predictions, and many other things.
Example of solving linear equations using substitution method
y = 2x + 6
3x + y = 11
We start by substituting the y in the second equation.
3x + (2x + 6) = 11
5x + 6 = 11
5x = 5
X = 1
Now when we have the value of x we can substitute the value in the first equation and find out the value of y.
y = 2x + 6
y = 2 x 1 + 6
y = 8
The solution of the linear equation is (1,6)
