Learning objective: Add numbers with up to 4 digits using the formal written methods of columnar addition

Column Addition of up to 4 Digits (A) WORKSHEET DESCRIPTION

The first in our series of two worksheets on column addition of up to 4 digit numbers, this worksheet will see pupils adding pairs of numbers together where either no exchange or only one exchange is required.
The worksheet begins with a reminder of a method that learners can use to efficiently find the sum of two single digit numbers: using number bonds of 10 and adding the remainder.

Section B consists of 12 column addition questions that are already set up for learners. In section C there are 6 further questions to answer although this time pupils will have to set up the model for column addition themselves.

Section D consists of three problem solving questions.

All worksheets are created by the team of experienced teachers at Cazoom Maths.

Frequently Asked Questions

The worksheet introduces a helpful method for adding single digit numbers by using number bonds to 10, then adding any remainder. This strategy helps Year 4 pupils build confidence before tackling the larger column addition problems. It's a foundation skill that makes the formal written method much more manageable.
