Partitioning Numbers to 1,000,000 WORKSHEET

Suitable for Year groups: Year 5
Learning objective: Identify the place value in large whole numbers

Partitioning Numbers to 1,000,000 WORKSHEET DESCRIPTION

Partitioning numbers plays an important role in students ability to calculate mentally with numbers. With this worksheet your pupils will practise fixed partitioning and introduce them to flexible partitioning.

Part-whole models are used in section A where learners will partition numbers according to place value. Next, in section B pupils complete number sentences for numbers with up to six digits such as 73,394 = 70,000 + 3,000 + 300 + 90 + 4.
Place value counters are used in section C where learners are encouraged to group them in order to partition the number represented in three different ways.

All worksheets are created by the team of experienced teachers at Cazoom Maths.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fixed partitioning breaks numbers down strictly by place value, such as writing 73,394 as 70,000 + 3,000 + 300 + 90 + 4. Flexible partitioning allows children to break numbers apart in different ways that might be more useful for mental calculations, giving them greater number sense when working with large whole numbers up to 1,000,000.
