Translations and Reflections in the 1st Quadrant (B) WORKSHEET

Suitable for Year groups: Year 5
Learning objective: Identify, describe and represent the position of a shape following a reflection or translation, using the appropriate language, and know that the shape has not changed.

Translations and Reflections in the 1st Quadrant (B) WORKSHEET DESCRIPTION

This worksheet develops pupils’ understanding of translations and reflections in the first quadrant using coordinate grids and clearly structured tasks.

In Section A, pupils translate shapes using written instructions before describing the movement from one shape to another, reinforcing the language of left/right and up/down. Section B focuses on reflections, with pupils reflecting shapes in given mirror lines and then identifying and drawing the mirror line that links an object to its image.

Section C extends learning by combining translations and reflections, requiring pupils to follow two-step instructions and track how a shape moves across a larger grid. In Section D, pupils reason about how coordinates change under translation, work out coordinates after a reflection, and compare the results of applying transformations in a different order.

The worksheet builds fluency, accuracy, and reasoning while emphasising that transformations change position but not the shape itself.

All worksheets are created by the team of experienced teachers at Cazoom Maths.

Frequently Asked Questions

Children should be comfortable reading and plotting points on a coordinate grid in the first quadrant, as they'll be working with coordinates throughout the activities. They also need to count squares accurately on a grid to measure distances and should be able to identify and name basic 2D shapes, since these form the foundation for understanding how transformations affect different geometric figures.
