Estimating Rates of Change (B) WORKSHEET

Suitable for Year groups: Year 10, Year 11
GCSE Tier: Higher
Targeting grades: 8-9
Prerequisite knowledge: Drawing tangents, finding gradients of straight lines.
Learning Objective: To be able to draw a tangent or chord to a curve and calculate the instantaneous or average rate of change.

Estimating Rates of Change (B) WORKSHEET DESCRIPTION

This worksheet follows on from Estimating Rates of Change (A) by providing some contextual exam-style questions.

Question 1 shows a graph showing the volume of water being drained form a container. It asks for what the gradient would represent and requires learners to find both an instantaneous and an average rate of change.

Question 2 has a speed-time graph and requires learners to draw a tangent to find the acceleration at a given time and then an average acceleration.

All worksheets are created by the team of experienced teachers at Cazoom Maths.

Frequently Asked Questions

Students should be comfortable with drawing tangents to curves and finding gradients of straight lines before tackling these problems. These foundational skills are essential since the worksheet requires learners to construct tangent lines accurately and then calculate their gradients to determine rates of change in real-world contexts.
