Forming Equations from Ratios (A) WORKSHEET

Suitable for Year groups: Year 9, Year 10
GCSE Tier: Foundation/Higher
Targeting grades: 4-5
Prerequisite knowledge: Ratios, solving linear equations, rearranging simple formulae.
Learning Objective: To be able to form and solve equations from ratios.

Forming Equations from Ratios (A) WORKSHEET DESCRIPTION

This worksheet will guide your learners through forming equations from simple ratios across three sections.

Section A involves filling in missing values to complete equivalent ratios, complete sentences linking two variables, and then writing equations based on these ratios. For example: in the ratio 1 : 5, if the ratio is in the form x : y, then we could say that y is 5 times larger than x, and therefore y = 5x and x = 1⁄5 y

Section B challenges students to match given ratios to their corresponding linear equations.

Lastly, Section C requires students to express 9 further ratios as linear equations on their own.

For students studying higher tier, they can now try Forming Equations from Ratios (B).

All worksheets are created by the team of experienced teachers at Cazoom Maths.

Frequently Asked Questions

Students should be confident with ratios, solving linear equations, and rearranging simple formulae before tackling this resource. These foundational skills are essential as learners will need to manipulate ratio relationships and express them algebraically. Without this prior knowledge, students may struggle to make the connection between ratios and their corresponding linear equations.
