Indices (A) WORKSHEET

Suitable for Year groups: Year 8, Year 9
GCSE Tier: Foundation/Higher
Targeting grades: 4-5
Prerequisite knowledge: Integer and decimal multiplication. Square and cube numbers.

Indices (A) WORKSHEET DESCRIPTION

Students will work with indices of numbers throughout this worksheet.

In section A, they are asked to find the value of calculations such as 2⁵ and 0.6² - 0.1².

Then in section B, learners will compare full expressions and index notation.

Section C gets more complicated as students consider statements such as 2ⁿ = 8, and they have to state the value of n.

There is also an extension that will see learners investigate negative numbers and powers. Here, they will find -1 squared, cubed, to the power of four and five and use their findings to work out -1 to other powers such as 124 and 0.
