Inputs and Outputs WORKSHEET

Suitable for Year groups: Year 7, Year 8
GCSE Tier: Foundation
Targeting grades: 1-3
Prerequisite knowledge: Completing four operations using mental methods.
Learning Objective: Recognise inverse operations

Inputs and Outputs WORKSHEET DESCRIPTION

Your students can get a practice of mental methods whilst considering operations and their inverses throughout this worksheet. Number machines are also a good stepping stone for algebraic methods.

In section A, students will be processing inputs through single-operation function machines.

In section B, students will complete the number machines by using the operations and their inverses to complete both inputs and outputs.

Pupils will use given inputs and outputs to decipher the operation of each function machine in section C.

We have provided four blank function machines in section D. Parents/teachers can design their own questions or challenge pupils to design questions for their peers.

All inputs and outputs are positive integers.

All worksheets are created by the team of experienced teachers at Cazoom Maths.

Frequently Asked Questions

Students should be confident with completing four operations using mental methods before attempting these function machine problems. This foundation is essential because they'll need to quickly calculate inputs and outputs, especially when working backwards through inverse operations. The mental arithmetic skills will help them focus on understanding the function machine concept rather than getting bogged down with calculations.
