Introducing Functions - Using Function Machines WORKSHEET DESCRIPTION

Introducing function notation using ā€œfunction machinesā€ is a fantastic way to help learners visualise and understand the concept of functions. This worksheet will build students’ understanding and confidence in using function notation and evaluating functions.

In Section A, learners are given inputs, functions, and outputs, and are asked to express these using function notation. They will also match function machines to the correct function notation and fill in missing details in function machines when provided with the function notation.

Then, in Section B, pupils are asked to complete function machines for eight different functions before using these to evaluate the functions for given values.

Students will encounter functions denoted by f, g, and h and the variable š‘„.

All worksheets are created by the team of experienced teachers at Cazoom Maths.

Frequently Asked Questions

Pupils should be comfortable finding numerical inputs and outputs from function machines, as this forms the foundation for understanding function notation. They'll also need skills in manipulating expressions and working with inverse functions, since these concepts build naturally into the more formal notation covered in this resource.
