Mean: Finding the Missing Number WORKSHEET DESCRIPTION

This worksheet develops fluency in using the mean to determine missing values in a data set.

Students begin with straightforward calculations in Section A, where they use the given mean to find one missing number.

Section B introduces common misconceptions, asking students to spot, correct, and explain errors.

Two questions in Section C follow a Variation Theory–style sequence designed to deepen understanding of how changing individual values affects the total and, in turn, the mean. Students work through carefully structured examples before reasoning whether a missing value should be higher or lower based on its impact on the overall average.

Section D progresses to reasoning problems, including constructing data sets, comparing totals, and adjusting the mean after a change to one value.

Finally, Section E provides algebraic mean problems requiring students to solve for unknowns in multiple sets.

All worksheets are created by the team of experienced teachers at Cazoom Maths.
