Our Solar System - Discovering Size WORKSHEET
Our Solar System - Discovering Size WORKSHEET DESCRIPTION
Celebrate World Space Week from 4th October at home or in school with this fun and engaging worksheet.
The aim is to create scale drawings of the planets in our solar system to fit on an A3 piece of paper.
The Sun is scaled down to have a diameter of 282 cm, and from here, learners will use multiplicative relationships to discover the relative size of each of the 8 planets and construct them to scale using a compass. The worksheet is structured to guide students through the process and to encourage them to consider how scales work whilst hoping to inspire some awe and wonder and the universe we journey through.
All worksheets are created by the team of experienced teachers at Cazoom Maths.

Frequently Asked Questions
Students should be comfortable working with scales represented as ratios and performing metric conversions before tackling this activity. These foundational skills are essential because learners will need to apply multiplicative relationships to determine how each planet's actual diameter translates to their scaled drawing. Without this prerequisite knowledge, students may struggle to understand how the scaling process works mathematically.
