What Do Year 5 Students Learn in Maths?

Year 5 mathematics builds significant mathematical sophistication, with children aged 9-10 extending their understanding across all areas in preparation for Year 6 and the end of Key Stage 2 assessments. This penultimate primary year introduces concepts that will be developed further in secondary school, including more formal algebraic thinking.

Number work extends to reading, writing, ordering and comparing numbers to at least 1,000,000, determining the value of each digit. Children develop fluency with all four operations, using long multiplication for two-digit multipliers and introducing long division. They work confidently with negative numbers in context, such as temperature and number lines.

Fractions, decimals and percentages become interconnected. Children learn to recognise the percentage symbol and understand that percentages relate to number of parts per hundred. They multiply and divide numbers by 10, 100 and 1,000 involving decimals, and add and subtract fractions with different denominators using equivalent fractions.

Geometry develops to include measuring and drawing angles, calculating angles around a point and on a straight line, and identifying 3D shapes from 2D representations. Children learn to translate and reflect shapes on coordinate grids. Statistics work progresses to solving comparison, sum and difference problems using tables, timetables and line graphs.
