Expanding Brackets and Simplifying WORKSHEET DESCRIPTION

Once learners are confident in expanding single brackets, it is important that your students are faced with expressions where expanding and simplifying is necessary. This worksheet provides ample practice expanding and simplifying expressions such as 9 + 3( c + 4 ) and 7k( 8k + 9 ) - 3( k +7 ).

Starting in section A, students can practice these skills with ten expressions that contain one bracket to be expanded and one extra term. Only one variable is present in each expression and all terms are positive. Building on this, section B introduces positive and negative terms and an extra variable.

In section C, pupils will expand and simplify expressions that contain two single brackets. Again all terms are positive to start with and all but one question contains only one variable.

Finally, section Ц will challenge and extend students with expressions that contain two single brackets, both positive and negative terms.

All worksheets are created by the team of experienced teachers at Cazoom Maths.

Frequently Asked Questions

Before tackling this worksheet, pupils should be comfortable with negative number operations, collecting like terms, and expanding single brackets. These foundational skills are essential as students will be applying bracket expansion within more complex expressions that require careful handling of positive and negative terms across multiple variables.
