Order of Operations - Introducing Brackets and Indices WORKSHEET DESCRIPTION

The second in our collection on order of operations (formally known as BODMAS), this worksheet introduces calculations, including brackets and indices. Students are only required to square numbers in expressions containing indices.

Sections A and B begin with an example, where we encourage pupils to underline which part of the calculation they will work out first and second. This is to avoid any misconceptions, such as including a number twice within their calculations.

Next, in section C, students are faced with fifteen more questions to answer.

Sections D and E consist of three questions each where students have to insert brackets or choose the correct operation in order to make the statements true.

All worksheets are created by the team of experienced teachers at Cazoom Maths.

Frequently Asked Questions

Students should be comfortable performing addition, subtraction, multiplication (including squaring) and division mentally before tackling these BODMAS problems. Having these basic arithmetic skills secure will allow pupils to focus on applying the correct order of operations rather than getting stuck on the individual calculations. This foundation is essential for successfully working through expressions that combine multiple operations.
