Simplify Algebraic Fractions (A) WORKSHEET DESCRIPTION

This worksheet is designed to help students practise simplifying algebraic fractions. The problems encourage learners to apply their knowledge of factorisation and common factors to reduce complex fractions to their simplest forms.

The worksheet presents a series of 15 algebraic fractions for students to simplify, making it an excellent introduction to algebraic fractions. The problems increase in complexity, starting with simpler expressions and progressing to more challenging ones that require multiple steps of factorisation. In most exercises, learners will be identifying common factors across three to four terms, while the last two questions require students to factorise quadratic expressions.

After completing this worksheet, learners will be prepared to tackle "Simplify Algebraic Fractions (B)," where more advanced problems involving the factorisation of quadratics are introduced.

All worksheets are created by the team of experienced teachers at Cazoom Maths.

Frequently Asked Questions

Students should be confident with factorising expressions and multiplying and dividing algebraic expressions before tackling these problems. These foundational skills are essential because simplifying algebraic fractions relies heavily on identifying and cancelling common factors. Without a solid grasp of factorisation techniques, learners may struggle to recognise how to reduce the fractions to their simplest forms.
