Substituting into Quadratic Expressions WORKSHEET

Suitable for Year groups: Year 8, Year 9
GCSE Tier: Foundation/Higher
Targeting grades: 4-5
Prerequisite knowledge: Using the correct order of operations to substitute into linear expressions.
Learning Objective: Substitute numerical values into formulae and expressions.

Substituting into Quadratic Expressions WORKSHEET DESCRIPTION

In this worksheet students will substitute positive and negative integers into quadratic expressions, making it ideal preparation for using tables of values to plot quadratic graphs.

Pupils are encouraged to underline which part of the calculation they will work out first and second in Section A. This is to avoid any errors, such as including a number twice within their calculations, and to ensure they are considering the correct order of operations.

In SectionB, learners will choose the correct value of expression after given numbers are substituted in place of variables from a choice of four answers. This section is designed in order to draw out any misconceptions.

Students will substitute into a further 8 quadratic expressions in Section C.

All expressions contain only one variable and up to three terms.

All worksheets are created by the team of experienced teachers at Cazoom Maths.

Frequently Asked Questions

Students should already be comfortable using the correct order of operations to substitute into linear expressions before tackling quadratic ones. This foundation is essential because quadratic expressions involve more complex calculations, particularly when dealing with squared terms and multiple operations that must be performed in the right sequence.
