Order of Operations - Calculating with Indices WORKSHEET DESCRIPTION

This worksheet develops students’ fluency and reasoning with powers within the order of operations.

Section A begins with straightforward calculations combining indices and the four operations. In the first question, the same three digits are used throughout, but one element changes in each expression to highlight the impact of order and position. This is followed by an expression-builder task that helps students move from simple calculations to more complex expressions involving multiple operations.

In Section B, learners tackle a range of reasoning and problem-solving challenges. These include identifying and explaining mistakes, arranging expressions in ascending order, constructing their own indexed expressions, and tackling logic-based puzzles such as filling missing digits, choosing the odd one out, and inserting a power to make an equation true.
